Thursday - Day 1- Sessions

Description

Murray Baillie will show a short video from the library deep inside Atlantic Institution, a maximum security facility located in Renous, New Brunswick. Murray will talk about building and maintaining a collection in English and French to better serve a maximum security prison population of about two hundred and describe the operation of that library and dealing with its demands and limitations, such as hours, the law, and supervising inmate employees. He will address how the librarian maintains the discipline and good order of the library and co-operates with other departments. The Atlantic Insitution librarian has to cope with a harsh environment where there are stabbings, murders and suicides. Some of the language used in this session may be offensive. Finally, he will deal with the state of libraries and librarianship in the Correctional Service of Canada.
