Description

How does a book like The Birth House take shape? How does an author mould raw ideas into a finished work of art?  There is no formula for writing a novel, so writers follow their instincts, feeling their way along as the project develops and doing whatever seems right.  But when striving to depict a period setting, as Ami McKay does with stunning success in The Birth House, an author needs factual information about what life at that time and in that place was like, in order to bring the narrative to life.  This is where the library comes in, playing a key role in the writing process.  In this session, Ami McKay will take us on a tour through her creative process during the composition of The Birth House and the new novel she is working on.
